On Friday, June 7, 2019, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) appointed Mr. David Lindsay as Special Advisor on Recycling and Plastic Waste to foster discussion and help develop a path forward for transition of the Blue Box Program to full producer responsibility. Mr. Lindsay will be engaging with municipal and producer stakeholders over the next two months to discuss and understand sector perspectives on transitioning the Blue Box Program. Mr. Lindsay will then submit a report to the MECP by July 31, outlining what he learned and his recommendations for moving forward.
Stewardship Ontario supports Mr. Lindsay in this important work as the government charts a course to full producer responsibility for the Blue Box Program. We are confident the transition can be achieved in a thoughtful and orderly way that ensures no disruption to residential recycling services. Full producer responsibility will deliver many benefits, including improved environmental performance and a standard list of materials collected across Ontario. We will continue to update stakeholders on any developments.
